Day 462

I spent last weekend doing a workshop in Pontiac, MI, called Text and Texture, Expressive Calligraphy, with Yukimi Annand. It was wonderful, three full days immersed in making art. I always struggle to include text in my artwork, because my handwriting is so bad. In this workshop we designed several alphabets and experimented with writing with tools from nature, like sticks, twigs, seed pods, rocks and shells. Since we were concentrating on expressing ourselves and mark making, not penmanship, it was very freeing and confidence building.

On the third day we put our exercise sheets together and made a cover to make a book.

I also looked through the pile of papers and made these notecards.

I also put this 5x7 fragment from a large sheet into a mat.

I really enjoyed the workshop! It was very inspirational for me, which was what I was hoping. Many thanks to Gail for letting me stay at her house.
